“There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment”
– Robert Frank

My passion for photography and my love for the written word were not discovered early in my adult life. The idea of being an artist was foreign to me, though over the years I would take photos on vacations here and there. I was a highly trained ophthalmic technologist working with a surgeon for over twenty-five years. While I formed a love for the arts in my youth, my professional life revolved around science and medicine. In the spring of 2014, my whole world pivoted. A surgical injury damaged my central nervous system and the motor function in my right arm, introducing me to the world of chronic pain and disabling me from continuing in my trained profession. I had to begin a new journey; life as I knew it was no longer attainable.

“There is no road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone”
– Jerry Garcia

For me, photography is a meld of the senses.  Smelling a field of flowers and visualizing the result on film. Hearing the crashing of waves against the shoreline, the taste of the sea signifying I am where I am meant to be at this moment. Feeling the texture of beach rocks or seeing the droplets of early morning dew on leaves; all cues to align with the moment and capture the photograph.

My camera is a tool to convey my message, the ink for my poetry. It is not my artistic goal to direct your interpretation; where I see a walking path as a moment of respite, you may see an entrance into a new realm. Art can be a moment of visual enjoyment and a safe space to find your own inspiration.

Welcome to my world of Visual Poetry.
